My mother always told me: "If there is one school curriculum that could provide a diploma to be good parents, it should be part of our basic education" I realized in my early 30s, how right she was. We embark on parenthood armed with knowledge based on our own upbringing, wise advice handed down through the generations and of course from our own personal (first and second hand) experience. Babies and children are individual and so very different. Parents too have different ideas on what is right and wrong for their children. As such there can be no right or wrong and certainly no gold standard. Hence there is no school to hand out that elusive diploma of parenting. There are issues in ranging from feeding to sleeping and learning to vaccinations that are common to all children. Issues in pregnancy too are often a source of concern no matter how small they may be. Advice and solutions to these issues can be sought through likeminded highly experienced specialists and practitioners like doctors, nurses, doulas, midwives and psychologists.
